November's Retro Challenge

November is one of those months were peace meets ciaos for us. We are settling into school schedules and enjoying the change in weather and then wham-o Thanksgiving and Christmas festivities. I loathe that overwhelming feeling of being and having too many things on my plate.

Normanrockwellrefugeethanksgiving

I saw this Norman Rockwell Post magazine cover and it hit me hard. I knew immediately that I wanted to be thankful for my life and the wonderful blessings I have each and everyday.

So this month, I encourage you to take the time to scrapbook about what you are thankful for. This ad is just for inspiration. Put yourself in her shoes. Reflect on your life. As always, you can use the ad design, colors or theme for inspirtion, but I want the LO to be from your prespective.

Here is mine:

Please put your artwork in the gallery, then link it to either here or the forum thread  for November's Retro Challenge. Deadline to qualify for random drawing is November 30th.

Give Thanks Wreath Tutorial

Happy November everyone!  We are moving into my favorite time of year.  This Thanksgiving will be a first for my family; it will be the first that we celebrate with just the five of us.  But that doesn't mean that it still can't be festive!  To get us into the Thanksgiving spirit, I made this wreath that hangs on our fridge.

You'll need a large sheet of chipboard (if you don't have plain chipboard, just adhere two sheets of cardstock together), patterned paper (I used papers from the Scenic Route Ashville and Sumner lines), chipboard for your title (I used Doodlebug Hopscotch Glitter chipboard), some ribbon, and a pen to roll your leaves.

You'll want to start by making two circles, one inside the other.  The outer diameter should be approximately 8 inches and the inner diameter approximately 5.5 inches.  I used a circle cutter to make my circles, but there's nothing wrong with tracing plates, mugs or cups!

I had to use a craft knife to cut all the way through the chipboard.  If the edges are a little rough, don't worry, they will be covered later.

Your base should look like this once it's all cut out:

Now we need to cover with patterned paper.  I used a glue stick to adhere my paper.

Dsc02487

I used a craft knife to trim around the base.  Again, don't worry if the edges aren't perfect.  You will want to repeat these last two steps for the other side of the base.

Dsc02489

We're going to cover the edges with ribbon.  I just loosely circled my wreath with the ribbon to measure.

Dsc02490

I used double-sided tape to adhered the ribbon to the wreath base.

Dsc02491

After adhering, I used the flat end of my rub-on roller to smooth out the ribbon.  It doesn't have to be perfect, for most of it will be covered with leaves.  You'll want to repeat for the inner circle of the wreath base.

Now you're ready to cut out the leaves.  You can use this template (Download leaf_pattern.pdf ) or freehand them.  You'll want about 30-35 leaves.

Dsc02488

To give them dimension, simply wrap around a pen and hold for a couple seconds.

Your finished leaf will look like this:

When you have a nice pile of leaves, you can start adhering them to the base.  I used foam dots for a little dimension.

Dsc02502

You want to adhere the leaves in a random pattern, making sure the base is covered.

Dsc02503

Continue until the entire base is covered in leaves.

Dsc02504

You're almost done!  Simply add the title and your Thanksgiving wreath is ready for the holiday!
